Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: the father of “Back to the Future” and “Forrest Gump” adapts a literary classic.
In 2021, Robert Zemeckis, the director of great classics like Back to the Future and Forrest Gump, unveils for Netflix the fantasy comedy Holy Witches, adaptation of the famous novel by Roald Dahl, the author of Charlie and the chocolate factory. Good news, the film, a funny adventure full of special effects with an astonishing Anne Hathaway as the villain, can be seen this evening on TFX!
With Sacréeswitches, Robert Zemeckis tells the funny, grating and moving story of Bruno, a young orphan. In 1967, the latter came to live with his adorable grandmother, in the small rural town of Demopolis, Alabama.
While the little boy and his grandmother cross paths with witches who are as attractive as they are formidable, the grandmother takes our budding hero to a sumptuous seaside resort. Unfortunately, they arrive at the very moment when the Chief Witch gathers her minions from all over the world – incognito – to implement her sinister designs…
Sacred Witches was the subject of controversy upon its release. In the film, Anne Hathaway hides hands that only have three fingers under a pair of gloves. A visual detail which appears neither in the original book nor in the 1990 film adaptation and which has caused indignation among certain people suffering from ectrodactyly (a genetic disease which manifests itself in malformations of the hands and feet). The production of the film, as well as the actress, expressed their apologies.
Finally, we note that for the scene where all the witches reveal their true faces, Anne Hathaway went through an intense makeup phase. Most sessions lasted five hours in order to make the actress unrecognizable.
