Tonight on TV: When Chuck Norris faced Bruce Lee

Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: Bruce Lee in front and behind the camera.

After being revealed in the United States in the series The Green Hornet, Bruce Lee returns to China, determined to make a career as an actor. On site, he was immediately hired by producer Raymond Chow, from the modest Golden Harvest studio.

After a first collaboration on Big Boss, which enjoyed great success when it was released in 1971, the two men worked together again on La Fureur de Vaincre. Bringing in ten times more than its initial budget worldwide, this film propelled Bruce Lee to the rank of international star.

The same year, the latter decided to multiply the hats on his third feature film, La Fureur du dragon. At the same time screenwriter, director and producer, he also slips into the skin of the main character, Tang Lung, whose martial skills allow him to repel the thugs who attacked the owner of a Chinese restaurant in Rome.

Classic of the martial arts film, The Fury of the Dragon is especially worth for its humor, as well as for the final fight scene between Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris in the Colosseum. Filmed in four days, this cult sequence has become the symbol of a passing of the torch between the man nicknamed the “Little Dragon” and his on-screen adversary, then a karate champion, who is becoming known to the general public.

When it was released in 1972, The Dragon’s fury grossed around $130 million worldwide – more than a thousand times its production budget! In France, it totals more than 4 million admissions.
