Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: Christopher Nolan once again explores one of his favorite themes.
It was after five years of writing that Christopher Nolan came up with the screenplay for Tenet. The plot follows a secret agent played by John David Washington, who is forced to manipulate the flow of time to prevent the advent of World War III.
We find here the fetish theme of the director which irrigates the entirety of his filmography in different forms, namely the relationship to time. And if some thought that the filmmaker had reached his climax in his way of treating him on screen with Dunkirk in 2017, it is clear that he managed to push the cursor even further. Echoing its title as a palindrome (a word or group of words that can be read from left to right or from right to left while keeping the same meaning), Tenet parallels two temporalities that each follow their own meaning, and intersect by times.
While Christopher Nolan has often been criticized for over-explaining his feature films, he refuses here to dwell on the why and how, offering a more sensory approach to the viewer. Like the Protagonist, the latter is encouraged to let go and agree not to understand everything at first, even if it means revisiting the action (or reviewing the film) to better understand certain details. Its broadcast this evening on TF1 is therefore not to be missed.
