In 1999, Tom Cruise auditioned to play the hero of The Mummy franchise. If the role is finally awarded to Brendan Fraser, it is only a postponement. Indeed, a reboot of the saga was launched in 2017, and this time, the actor lends his features to the hero. He therefore faces the terrible antagonist, interpreted by Sofia Boutella, for a result… which turns out to be catastrophic. In addition to the Razzie Award for Worst Actor awarded to him, Tom Cruise must also collect the disappointed hopes of the studios.
Indeed, since Dracula Untold in 2014, Universal has been toying with the idea of also having its extended universe: a Dark Universe featuring famous characters such as Frankenstein’s Monster, the Werewolf, the Strange Creature of the Black Lake , The Invisible Man or Van Helsing. But the failure of The Mummy reshuffles all the cards. Supposed to launch this connected universe by notably presenting Doctor Jekyll in the guise of Russell Crowe, the film brings in “only” 409 million dollars worldwide for a filming budget of 125 million (which does not include the marketing budget of at least 100 million).
With an average viewer rating of 2.4 out of 5, The Mummy is the lowest-rated feature film in Tom Cruise’s filmography by AlloCiné internet users. A bad and distant memory since the actor currently has the coast! Released on May 25, Top Gun: Maverick, of which he is the headliner, continues to break records. Across the Atlantic, it recently reached a major milestone by overtaking James Cameron’s Titanic with $7 million in revenue.
