Tonight on TV: yes, Clint Eastwood faced the President of the United States!

Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: Clint Eastwood is royal in an excellent crime film from the 90s.

When a work by the great Clint Eastwood is on TV, we don’t hesitate for a single second and tune into the channel that has the good idea to broadcast it! The channel in question, in this case, is Arte, which is offering this Sunday evening the excellent detective film Les Pleins Powers, directed and performed by the Hollywood legend who will celebrate his 94th birthday next month.

Released in theaters in 1997, Full powers tells the story of Luther Whitney (Clint Eastwood who, 48 years later, is still ashamed of this western), a modern Arsène Lupine, an elegant thief who has always attacked the rich. At the end of his long career, he sets out to rob the residence of Sullivan, one of the richest men in Washington, who was away on a business trip with his young wife, Christy.

Everything is going well. Luther is about to leave when he discovers that the partition of the strong room is a two-way mirror which overlooks the bedroom. On the other side of this mirror, Luther witnesses a murder involving Christy but also… Richmond, the President of the United States!

Brilliant direction, impeccable script by William Goldman (winner of two Oscars for Butch Cassidy and the Kid and The President’s Men), flawless interpretation… Full powers, adapted from the novel by David Baldacci, is a detective film treat. The suspense is breathtaking, a few notes of humor spice it all up, and what a joy to see Clint Eastwood confront a President of the United States played by Gene Hackman!

A trip to Cannes for this high-quality detective film

We will add that Full powersscreened at the closing of the 1997 Cannes Film Festival, does not only include the illustrious Clint Eastwood And Gene Hackman in his credits, but also Ed Harris, Laura Linney, Scott Glenn, Dennis Haysbert and Judy Davis!

Perhaps not the best known film of Clint Eastwood, Full powers, which attracted nearly a million spectators in French cinemas, nonetheless remains a highly recommendable work for those who appreciate high-quality detective films. Hard to resist, right?

Tonight on Arte at 9 p.m.
