After the successes of Jerry Maguire and Vanilla Sky, Cameron Crowe suffered a bitter failure with Rencontres à Elizabethtown. The director then moved away from cinema for six years, before returning with the project of adapting the memoirs of a certain Benjamin Mee.
Exasperated by the fate reserved for the abandoned animals of the Dartmoor Zoological Park in England, where 200 endangered exotic species lived, the latter took the decision to buy it back and renovate it.
To embody this single father ready to make a new start, the director has only one name in mind: Matt Damon. He goes to the set of True Grit to convince the actor, who accepts the role. Faced with his partner Scarlett Johansson, the latter does not hesitate to overcome his phobic fear of snakes during a scene where he is in the middle of reptiles.
Benefiting from an authentic reconstruction (a zoo was built for the needs of the film), this feel good film about family, bereavement and second chances seduces the public. Upon its release, Nouveau Départ garnered $241 million in worldwide revenue, which is five times its production budget.
