Tony Shalhoub turns 70 and is investigating once again as Adrian Monk. For Shalhoub, this will certainly not be his last appearance in front of the camera.

Tony Shalhoub is celebrating his 70th birthday today, October 9th – and is handing out the greatest gift himself. It has been clear for a few months now: the actor will once again take on his legendary role of “Monk”. And it’s for one last case, as the title of the film spin-off suggests: According to US media reports, the film is called “Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie”.

Adrian Monk makes Tony Shalhoub a star

Adrian Monk, a detective and police consultant with obsessive-compulsive disorder and a range of phobias, made Tony Shalhoub famous. From 2002 to 2009, Monk solved his cases in San Francisco in 125 episodes. In the end, the most important one: the investigator found out why his wife Trudy Monk (Melora Hardin) had to die.

Shalhoub himself revealed in the spring that he would become Monk again: “We will make a 90-minute ‘Monk’ film for streaming,” said the actor in an interview on “Unheard Stories.” “It’s Monk post-Covid, and he’s in trouble. In addition to the series “Monk”, Shalhoub also enjoyed success on the big screen, appearing in films such as “A Crazy Genius Coup” (1990), “Big Night” (1996), “Men in Black” (1997), “Gattaca” (1997) or “State of Emergency” (1998).

Shalhoub achieved his greatest success and international fame with “Monk”. From 2003 to 2010, he was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for eight consecutive years, winning in 2003, 2005 and 2006. He also received the Golden Globe Award in 2003 for the role.

And what came after “Monk”? Tony Shalhoub appeared in films and on stage, had speaking roles in animated films such as “Cars” – and again got a role in a successful series: In “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” from 2017 he played the mathematics professor Abe Weissman, father of the Protagonist Midge Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan). For his performance, he won the 2019 Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and the Screen Actors Guild Award.

Shalhoub also seems to be very lucky in his private life. He has been married to his fellow actress Brooke Adams (74) since 1992. The two have worked together in several films and series, including Adams appearing as a guest star in five episodes of “Monk”. Adams brought an adopted daughter into the marriage, Josie Lynn (born 1989), who adopted Shalhoub. In 1994 the couple adopted another daughter, Sophie (born 1993). Tony Shalhoub’s brother Michael is also an actor and has made several guest appearances on “Monk.”

Next big project completed

Even at 70, Tony Shalhoub probably doesn’t have to worry about his future in front of the camera. In addition to the new “Monk” film, according to media reports, he will, among other things, portray the former automobile manager Carlos Ghosn (69) in a six-part TV series called “Fall of the God of Cars”. The former head of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi automobile group was charged with breach of trust in Japan in 2018 and spectacularly fled to Lebanon – allegedly hiding in a box of musical instruments.
