2023 was a vintage year for video games and 2024 is likely to be just as good. Will we have time to test everything?

After a year 2023 full of outings, 2024 adds another layer. Indeed, during the COVID period, the sector had regained a huge gain in interest with a market which had increased by 11.3% compared to 2019 (5.3 billion euros in France in 2020). As a result, companies have invested heavily by offering numerous titles in 2023 such as Baldur’s Gate 3, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom or even Alan Wake 2. Even if the post-COVID effect has been a disaster in terms of layoffs in 2023, with 10,500 people returned according to videogameslayoff.com (5900 in January 2024), the big releases continue however.

Xbox Developer Direct previews a crazy year for Xbox

As proof of this crazy year, just look at the latest conferences. In chronological order, it was Xbox which opened the ball with its Xbox Developer Direct, Thursday January 18, at 9 p.m. And according to the statements, fans of this console will be in heaven over the next 12 months.

As proof, there is for example Avowed which will be the next fantasy RPG from studio Obsidian (behind Fallout New Vegas and The Outer Worlds). It will be available in fall 2024 on PC and Xbox Series. There is also Hellblade 2, scheduled for May 21, 2024 also on PC and Xbox Series. Following the first opus, it will be of a similar duration with around 8 hours to see the end of it. Finally, there is Indiana Jones and the Ancient Circle created by Machine Games, the developers of the latest Wolfenstein. The title, which takes place between the films Raiders of the Lost Ark and the Last Crusade, will be in first person view (which created some debate). Its release date is not specified, but it is scheduled for 2024 on PC and Xbox Series.

PlayStation is not left out either

Rest assured dear PlayStation fans, you will not be harmed. The Japanese firm also held its conference with its State of Play. Lasting around 40 minutes, around fifteen games were unveiled on January 31, 2024 at 11 p.m. Judas, the next game from Ken Levine, creator of Bioshock and Bioshock Infinite, has shown the tip of its nose. And its legacy is felt as much in its gameplay (and its powers) as in its artistic direction. The title does not yet have a release date, but will be available on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series. Highly anticipated, there is Rise of the Ronin scheduled for March 22, 2024 as a PS5 exclusive. Produced by Team Ninja, it will be very inspired by the studio’s previous titles. And to finish, there is Hideo Kojima who presented Death Stranding 2 On The Beach with a generous video of around ten minutes. Spectators received a graphic slap in the face with software that once again seems promising. A direct sequel to the first opus, it will be released in 2025 exclusively on PS5.
