Shortly before the end of the holidays there is excitement in Vienna’s Donaustadt about a way to school that has become unsafe. Children are in danger.

The heavy transporters and gravel trucks are currently speeding through the urban development area of Berresgasse in Donaustadt every minute. A total of 3,000 new apartments and a new quarter for the city’s rapidly growing population are being built between Hirschstetten and Breitenlee. The mega construction site has made the way to school for many children from the nearby Berresgasse education campus much more unsafe. Quickly defuse the danger area Resident Martin Ertl is annoyed: “We have a lot of traffic even without a construction site! The intersection where the children have to cross the street is far too dangerous.” The large vehicles would block the view of the street when crossing. According to the ÖAMTC, around 470 accidents involving schoolchildren on the way to school occur in Austria every year, with the pupils mostly walking on foot. The office of District Manager Ernst Nevrivy (SPÖ) has now responded quickly to a “Krone” request. The danger point should be defused quickly together with the MA56. Additional road signs will be installed in the near future. Time is pressing, because the summer holidays end in two weeks.
