Too much salary demanded ?: DFB talks with Khedira apparently burst

Asked for too much salary?
DFB talks with Khedira apparently burst

For a long time, Sami Khedira was the hottest candidate for the position of DFB sports director. But according to a report, nothing will come of it: Apparently, the association and ex-national player will not find each other on a financial level either.

According to media reports, top candidate Sami Khedira will not become sports director of the German Football Association. As reported by “Sport Bild”, talks about signing the 2014 world champion failed. Khedira wanted to bring “at least one employee” with him and presented salary expectations that would have further burdened the financially ailing DFB. The association did not want to comment on the report when asked.

The 36-year-old Khedira was considered the hottest candidate for the vacant position of DFB sports director, after the 2024 European Championship finals in Germany he could have inherited national team director Rudi Völler. Völler, who took over the task after Oliver Bierhoff’s resignation, intends to resign after the home tournament.

Khedira had recently confirmed discussions with the association’s leadership, but assumed that other applicants would also be spoken to. According to the report, he already wanted to have the Völler successor confirmed. “It’s no secret that we spoke a few times, but we haven’t really gotten that specific or deep yet,” Khedira had previously told the “kicker”. Most recently he was a consultant at his former club VfB Stuttgart.

The “Sport Bild” writes that DFB President Bernd Neuendorf has informed his confidants in a video link that Khedira will not get the post. Neuendorf and Völler had the ultimately unsuccessful talks. Other contenders are Jochen Schneider, sports director at the New York Red Bulls and former sports director at Schalke 04, and the DFB U20 coach Hannes Wolf.
