Too much Star Wars? Kathleen Kennedy wants to copy James Bond to reboot the saga

On the occasion of Star Wars Day, which was held on May 4, 2023, producer Kathleen Kennedy, in charge of the famous galactic franchise, gave an overview of the future of the saga and her inspirations to revive interest in the universe created by George Lucas.

The last Star Wars movie to hit cinema screens was The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. While the next one won’t arrive until December 2025, Disney and Kathleen Kennedy have obviously taken the opportunity of this hiatus to rethink a franchise that has now fallen (a little) out of favor with part of the public.

In an interview with our colleagues fromEmpire Magazinethe one who has held the reins of Lucasfilm productions since its takeover by Disney in 2012, has thus revealed part of its plans. “I have often referred to (James) Bond, she simpers. At the time, there was a film every three or four years and there was not this pressure of having to have a film every year. I think it was very important for Star Wars. We have to eventualize this.”

A surprisingly honest statement in the form of an acknowledgment of failure from the producer, who has obviously learned from her mistakes and heard the criticisms leveled at the latest trilogy of films.

At the moment, three upcoming feature films from the franchise have been made official:

• A film about the first Jedi and the discovery of the Force, set 25,000 years before the events of the Skywalker saga, directed by James Mangold (Logan, Indiana Jones 5).
• A film telling the rest of the series The Mandalorian And Ahsokadirected by Dave Filoni.
• A film set 15 years later The Rise of Skywalkerin which Rey (Daisy Ridley) will rebuild the Jedi order, directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Miss Marvel).

Disney and Lucasfilm have blocked the date of December 19, 2025 for the release of a Star Wars movie yet “untitled”but it is not yet known which of these three projects will occupy this slot.

One thing is certain, Kennedy and Disney want to take their time: “It’s much better to tell the truth […] We’ll make those movies when they’re ready to shoot, and we’ll release them when they’re ready to release.”she concluded in the same interview.

As a reminder, Kathleen Kennedy is one of Hollywood’s most brilliant producers. She began her career at the age of 28 producing AND the alien (1982), before working on countless cult films, such asIndiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1982), Back to the future (1985), Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), Jurassic Park (1993) or even Sixth Sense (1999).
