There are a variety of different toothpastes on the drugstore shelf and they all promise clean teeth and healthy gums. But not all products are created equal. We will tell you here what you should pay attention to when buying and which toothpastes are recommended.

Toothpaste test: the criteria

A good toothpaste should clean teeth and protect against tooth decay. One ingredient is particularly important for this and it is called fluoride. Fluoride remineralizes damaged teeth and makes them more resistant to acids. Fluoride also inhibits bacterial growth, counteracting plaque and inflammation. A good toothpaste should contain at least 1000 milligrams of fluoride per kilogram.

Also, a good toothpaste should be used whenever possible few problem substances such as sodium lauryl sulphate, as this surfactant lathers nicely but can irritate the mucous membranes. PEG compounds should also be avoided, as they make the skin more permeable. Anyone who cares about environmental protection should avoid liquid plastic in toothpaste if possible so that it does not get into the water.

Test winner at Ökotest

The consumer magazine Eco test examined 58 toothpastes for the above criteria. Most of these had a sufficiently high level of fluoride. However, some toothpastes contained one or more problematic substances and were therefore rated “inadequate” or “inadequate”. The following toothpastes, among others, received top marks:

  • the Alterra toothpaste with organic mint Gently removes plaque with mineral cleaning agents, protects against tooth decay and periodontal disease and prevents plaque. The natural aroma of organic mint ensures pleasant breath freshness.
  • the Alverde 5in1 Toothpaste Nanaminze offers protection against tooth decay, removes plaque, prevents periodontal disease, cares for the gums and gives fresh breath. Herbal extracts and mint oil ensure a fresh mouthfeel.
  • The toothpaste Smile for Good by Colgate cleans the teeth thoroughly and refreshes with mint. In addition, the toothpaste contains sodium bicarbonate, which is known for its gentle bleaching effect and conjures up beautiful white teeth.
  • The toothpaste Elmex caries protection forms a protective shield of calcium and fluoride around your teeth, remineralizes damaged areas in the enamel and protects teeth from tooth decay.
  • the Salthouse mineral toothpaste contains a mineral salt complex with magnesium, calcium, potassium and numerous trace elements. Together with fluoride and zinc, the toothpaste effectively protects against tooth decay and tartar formation and strengthens teeth and gums.

Test winner at Stiftung Warentest

Also Stiftung Warentest conducted a toothpaste test and examined 115 products. The test also checked the fluoride content in toothpaste, which should be at least 1000 milligrams per kilo.

As an additional criterion, Stiftung Warentest has the so-called abrasion examined, i.e. whether the toothpaste thoroughly removes stains caused by tea and coffee. In addition, the assessment included whether the Advertising promise and declaration of the ingredients match. These toothpastes, among others, received the best rating:

  • Elmex caries protection not only gets top marks from Ökotest, but also from Stiftung Warentest. The toothpaste effectively protects your teeth from tooth decay.
  • Also Logodent all-round protection gets top marks from Ökotest and Stiftung Warentest. The mildly foaming toothpaste cleans and cares for teeth and gums with mineral cleaning agents and without microplastics.
  • Curaprox encycal toothpaste Thanks to enzymes, it protects against caries and paradontitis, protects the oral mucosa and has a mild and pleasant taste.
  • Oral-B Professional Pro Repair reduces bleeding gums and helps repair tooth enamel in just 2 weeks. With a mild taste and soft texture.
  • the Meridol Toothpaste ensures a healthy oral flora with its antibacterial effect and fights the causes of gingivitis.

The best toothpaste for white teeth

Some toothpastes not only promise to ensure healthy teeth and gums, but also give hope for particularly white teeth. The brightening is through abrasives or bleaching substances achieved.

Since these can damage the enamel of your teeth if you use them frequently, you should not use them every day. Stiftung Warentest tested “toothpaste with a white claim” and found that the following toothpastes, among others, actually make teeth whiter:

  • Blend-a-med 3DWhite Luxe Glamorous WHITE Dissolves stubborn stains and prevents new stains. The formula is gentle on tooth enamel and freshens breath with a mint flavor.
  • the Signal WhiteNow Reduces the yellow cast of discolored teeth with immediate effect thanks to the special blue foam. Discolorations gradually disappear.
  • Colgate Sensation White gently whitens the teeth with microcrystal cleaners and prevents the formation of new discolorations. Refreshes the mouth and protects the teeth.
  • Pearl white beauty teeth whitening removes plaque and discoloration and promises a step whiter teeth after just 10 days. The paste also strengthens the enamel and does not contain any microplastics.

How to properly clean your teeth

  • To rid your teeth of bacterial plaque, you should brush your teeth twice a day for at least two to three minutes.
  • Since many bacteria also collect on the tongue, you should include them in your tooth brushing routine and clean them with a toothbrush or a tongue scraper.
  • You should use dental floss or interdental brushes once a day to clean the spaces between your teeth, as these are particularly susceptible to tooth decay and periodontitis.
  • You can use a mouthwash to help. But be careful: you should only use medical mouthwashes with the active ingredient chlorhexidine occasionally and under the dentist’s instructions, as they can otherwise cause discoloration or taste irritation.
