Top Gun Maverick: this big name in the sport almost played a pilot alongside Tom Cruise

Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton has just revealed that he has to play a driver in ‘Top Gun: Maverick’. But he had to turn down the opportunity to play alongside Tom Cruise…

Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton almost went from driving on asphalt to driving in the air! The seven-time world champion in the discipline has just revealed that he was to play in the feature film Top Gun: Maverick alongside Tom Cruise, but that he had to, very reluctantly, refuse the offer…

“When I heard a second Top Gun was coming, I thought, ‘Oh my God, I have to ask Tom Cruise if I can be in the movie.says the Briton, close friend of the Hollywood star and big fan of the 1986 classic, at the microphone of Vanity Fair. “I said, ‘I don’t care about the role. I might even just sweep something in the background.”

Tom Cruise immediately agreed to have Hamilton appear in the credits of Top Gun: Maverick. But the racing driver, who should have played one of the blockbuster drivers, was forced to decline the offer. The filming would indeed have taken place during the end of the F1 season, and it was impossible for him to divide his time between the sets and the circuits.

It is a resigned Lewis Hamilton who therefore had to announce the news to Tom Cruise and director Joseph Kosinski. “The most upsetting call I think I’ve ever had”declares the 37-year-old pilot bluntly, visibly touched not to shoot with the one who, last July, had come to support him (and blow out his 60 candles) at the British Formula 1 Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton can however smile again. The Briton will soon have the opportunity to work with Joseph Kosinski, since he is one of the producers of an Apple feature film currently in preparation which tells the story of a Formula 1 driver coming out of retirement to mentor a young driver and team up with him. In the main role, a certain Brad Pitt.
