Top Gun: why was the love scene filmed several months after the end of filming?

M6 broadcasts, this Thursday, May 19 at 9 p.m., Top Gun, the cult film with Tom Cruise. Télé Star invites you to discover why a scene from the film was made several months after the others.

The day after the presentation at the Cannes Film Festival of Top Gun: Maverickthe highly anticipated sequel to the saga with Tom Cruise, M6 is broadcasting this Thursday, May 19 at 9 p.m., Top Gunthe cult film directed by Tony Scott in 1986. For the occasion, Télé Star invites you to dive behind the scenes of the shooting and to discover in particular why the love scene between Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis was shot several months after filming wrapped.

Indeed, the very sensual scene between the characters of Pete Mitchell and Charlie was added well after the end of the shooting of Top Gun. The reason is simple. During the first test-screenings, several spectators found the love story between Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis a little too weak. Tony Scott therefore made the decision to add, at the very last moment, this scene in which the two actors kiss languidly. But it was not easy. Indeed, the American actress had dyed her hair for the needs of another film while Tom Cruise had, for his part, hair a little longer than in the other scenes of the film. Tony Scott therefore opted for a very clever trick: this scene was shot with a bluish light so that the spectators did not see these details.

Top Gun: why the sequel took so long to see the light of day

Yes Top Gun: Maverick will be released on May 25 on our screens, so we had to wait 36 years before knowing the rest of the adventures of Pete Mitchell. However, at the beginning of the 2010s, the second part of the saga was well advanced. But on August 19, 2012, when filming for the long-awaited sequel was about to begin, Tony Scott committed suicide by jumping off a bridge in San Pedro. Paramount, producers of the film, therefore decided to stop the project. It was finally Joseph Kosinski who picked up the project and signed Top Gun: Maverick presented at Cannes on May 18.
