Government wants to attract skilled workers with fast naturalization

The shortage of skilled workers cannot be overcome without more immigration. However, Germany is not particularly attractive in the international competition for qualified workers. The federal government wants to change that with a comprehensive reform.

The federal government wants to lure skilled workers from abroad with the prospect of a German passport – in addition, multiple nationalities should be possible in the future. “Germany must be an immigration country that is also attractive in the international competition for skilled workers,” says the government’s skilled labor strategy, which was available to the news portal “The Pioneer”.

Naturalization should therefore be possible in the future after five years, “in the case of special integration services” even after three years. According to the plans, immigration, residence and nationality law are to be modernized and procedures made faster and easier.

The shortage of skilled workers is now the central topic at a top-level talk between the government, trade unions and business in Berlin.

The government is anticipating an intensified shortage of skilled workers in the coming years. By 2026, 240,000 more jobs will need to be filled than potential workers will be available. There are shortages of skilled workers, among other things, in information technology, in educational and health professions as well as in hotels and restaurants.

The skilled labor strategy also deals with a problem that has received little attention so far: According to the document, every second immigrant worker leaves Germany again – because of “perceived lack of perspectives” or experiences with racism and discrimination.
