HSV defeats St. Pauli in a turbulent derby

The Hamburg city derby is not only about prestige, but also about promotion. St. Pauli takes the lead, but HSV comes back with a dream goal and then a double strike. In the end, an own goal brings the decision.

Attack of arch-rivals fended off, sights set on promotion again: Hamburger SV scored the long-awaited big points in an atmospheric and wild 109th city derby against FC St. Pauli. Coach Tim Walter’s team defeated the Kiez-Klub in their local Volkspark 4-3 (1-1) and advanced to second place in the second division.

Manolis Saliakas (36th) initially made St. Pauli dream of an away win. But first Jonas David equalized with his dream goal from around 25 meters just before the break (44th). Then Bakery Jatta (48′) and Moritz Heyer (52′) turned the game around with a double strike shortly after the break.

St. Pauli, the best team in German professional football to date in 2023, did not give up and came back through Elias Saad (71st). But an own goal by Jakov Medic (78th) restored the two-goal lead for HSV. The immediate goal by Jackson Irvine (79th) was no longer significant. This should probably end St. Pauli’s tender dreams of promotion. The red trousers now have a nine-point lead over their city rivals.

Jatta hits and has to go down

Fast-paced, heated, hotly contested: The 56,400 spectators in the Volksparkstadion saw a gripping derby with many opportunities – and goals. At first, the guests from Hamburger Kiez determined the events and took the lead with their fourth (!) big chance. But HSV fought back.

David’s shot on Sunday and a period of pressure early in the second half shook the arena. First Jatta, who got a hit on the ankle when he was hit and had to be replaced a little later, used a sleepiness in the brown and white defense. Four minutes later, Reis scored after Pauli keeper Nikola Vasilj had just scratched a Robert Glatzel header off the line.

“It’s about three points, but our fans expect a little more. It’s about sovereignty in the city, we’re in good spirits,” said HSV coach Walter immediately before kick-off on Sky and underlined the importance of the game: “We are full of confidence and obviously want to win the game.” The words of their trainer followed the HSV pros with a passionate performance with a lot of heart and will.

The game was accompanied by a large contingent of police. Due to a strict separation of the rival fan camps, there were no major incidents in the run-up to the game. During the game, both sides ignited pyrotechnics and ensured that the second half started late. Unknown people caused a stir when they put St. Pauli stickers on the Uwe-Seeler-Foot in front of the Volksparkstadion on Friday night.

Darmstadt with happy success

Meanwhile, second division leaders SV Darmstadt 98 remain on course. In the parallel game against Karlsruher SC, Südhessen celebrated a happy 2-1 (1-1) victory and returned to the road to success after the 0-1 defeat at Fortuna Düsseldorf. In front of 17,650 spectators in the sold-out stadium at Böllenfalltor, Braydon Manu and Phillip Tietz (50th) scored the goals for the lilies in the 26th minute. Fabian Schleusener (11th) gave Baden an early lead.

Darmstadt set the tone at the beginning and had the first chances. However, a goal by Filip Stojilkovic (3rd) was denied due to offside. A header from Tietz (9th) was too unplaced. The hosts didn’t let themselves be deterred by Schleusener’s surprising deficit, who skilfully steered the ball over the line from close range.

After the equalizer, Tietz (34th) again missed a good opportunity. Shortly before the break, Darmstadt goalkeeper Marcel Schuhen saved his team from going behind again after a shot by Marvin Wanitzek. Tietz rewarded the efforts of the leaders at the beginning of the second half, shortly afterwards Stojilkovic missed alone in front of KSC goalkeeper Marius Gersbeck. After that, the KSC reared up energetically, but could not take advantage of several good chances. Lucas Cueto alone missed the equalizer three times.
