In Great Britain the police are investigating a Conservative MP. Crispin Blunt is accused of rape and drug possession. The 63-year-old appears unconcerned after his release.

A conservative British MP has been temporarily arrested over rape allegations. Crispin Blunt of the ruling Tories, who has since been released, said on the online platform X that the arrest was “unnecessary” because he was “fully cooperating” with the investigators. He is “confident” that the investigation against him will ultimately be closed without charges.

According to police in the county of Surrey, south of London, Blunt was arrested on Wednesday morning and later released. In addition to the rape allegations, the investigation also involves suspected drug possession.

Blunt said he had already been questioned twice in connection with the allegations. “The first time was three weeks ago, when I first reported my fears about blackmail,” the 63-year-old wrote on X, without elaborating. The second questioning took place after his arrest.

The Tories have been rocked by a series of scandals in recent years. In May there were reports of a Conservative MP being arrested on rape charges. A Tory MP was arrested on rape allegations in 2020. His identity was never made public and the case was dropped.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s Conservatives are trailing the opposition Labor Party in polls ahead of next year’s general election. Last week the Tories suffered bitter defeats in two by-elections.
