Total War Warhammer 3: Confusing Marketing in China


Released only yesterday, the long-awaited Total War: Warhammer 3 is already causing debate… in China! Chinese fans of the license indeed criticize Creative Assembly for having made a disastrous marketing campaign for the game and let it be known on Steam.

The heart of the problem

The criticisms are absolutely not aimed at the game itself, but at the marketing strategy deployed to promote it in China. Daniel Ahmadan analyst specializing in video games, was able to point out the recurring problems among critics.

  • The early access version was given away to too many random streamers, big and small.
  • These streamers knew nothing about the game or how to play it, and were generally disinterested.
  • These streamers messed up parts of the game.

Bad targeting

It is true that for previous Total War games, Creative Assembly had really targeted its marketing, addressing it to players attracted by the license, or at least to those likely to be. In a statement, the company said that this time it tried to reach a much wider circle of potential players than before.

All this caused some problems, the main one being that the game was distributed to some streamers who did not know the license at all, nor the gameplay. What’s more, no specific embargo was given to themwhich resulted in the release of numerous spoilers.

The Total War fanbase also didn’t like the fact that Creative Assembly gave away codes for Warhammer 3 to streamers who had never played the games, but not to those who had real expertise on the license.

And Steam in all this?

Negative comments from Chinese users are still present on the platform. The Steam teams are generally rather reactive on this type of situation and it is expected that the comments will go back to Creative Assembly fairly quickly.
