(Boursier.com) — For the first time in the Middle East and North Africa zone, Satorp, a platform jointly owned by Aramco (62.5%) and TotalEnergies (37.5%), has succeeded in producing ISCC+ certified sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from used cooking oil by ‘coprocessing’.

Last August, the platform succeeded in coprocessing used cooking oil within its low-pressure hydrodesulphurization unit to produce a fuel meeting all the quality criteria of the SAF specifications. TotalEnergies contributed to this success by providing its experience and expertise.

Satorp has received international ISCC+ (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) certification to produce SAF. This certification will allow the platform to respond to the expected increase in demand for SAF in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

“This project on the Satorp platform is part of the objective set by TotalEnergies: to produce 1.5 million tonnes per year of SAF by 2030,” declared François Good, Director of Refining and Petrochemicals for Africa, the Middle East and Asia at TotalEnergies.

Remember that sustainable aviation fuels produced from used cooking oil allow a reduction of at least 80% in CO2 emissions over the entire life cycle, compared to their fossil equivalent.
