TotalEnergies: Patrick Pouyanné responds to the Bloom association

(CercleFinance.com) – In response to the letter of October 17, 2022 published by the Bloom association concerning the gas exploration project of TotalEnergies in South Africa, Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, today sent a letter Bloom and The Green Connection associations.

The CEO. confirms that TotalEnergies EP South Africa, with its partners, filed a production license application on September 5 and that an environmental and societal impact study is underway.

TotalEnergies EP South Africa has already voluntarily reduced the scope of the license application by excluding the area currently classified by the South African authorities as a protected maritime area, specifies the manager.

Patrick Pouyanné adds that this project should supply gas to the South African domestic market, whose economy is still mainly based on coal, the source of 80% of its current electricity production.

‘The use of gas, replacing the combustion of coal for the production of electricity, halves CO2 emissions and significantly reduces air pollution. The emissions avoided thanks to this gas development project will therefore be beneficial to the atmosphere.

Finally, the official indicates that TotalEnergies is developing a portfolio of solar and wind renewable energies in South Africa, in particular projects recently awarded in the context of calls for tenders organized by the government or by private companies.
