TotalEnergies: three projects in Angola

(Boursier.com) — TotalEnergies deploys its multi-energy strategy in Angola and announces the launch of the developments of the Begonia oil field, the Quiluma and Maboqueiro gas fields, as well as a first photovoltaic project with a capacity of 35 MWp, with a potential second phase of 45 MWc. TotalEnergies announces today the final investment decision on Begonia, the first development on block 17/06 located 150 kilometers off the coast of Angola, in agreement with the concessionaire, Agencia Nacional de Petroleo, Gas e Biocombustiveis (ANPG) and the partners of block 17/06. The Begonia development has five wells, which will be connected to Pazflor’s floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) unit, already in operation on Block 17. The commissioning, scheduled for the end of 2024, will increase the FPSO production of 30,000 barrels per day.

After CLOV Phase 3, another 30,000 barrels per day satellite project launched in June 2022 on Block 17, Begonia is the second project operated by TotalEnergies in Angola that will use standardized subsea production equipment, saving up to to 20% of costs and to accelerate the equipment delivery schedule.

The project, which represents an investment of 850 million dollars, foresees 1.3 million hours of work, of which 70% will be carried out in Angola.

TotalEnergies also announces the final investment decision for the ‘Non Associated Gas 1’ (NAG1) project, in which the Company holds an 11.8% stake alongside its partners, Eni (operator with 25.6%), Chevron (31%), Sonangol P&P (19.8%) and bp (11.8%).

NAG1 is the first non-associated natural gas project developed in Angola. Gas produced at the two offshore fields of Quiluma and Maboqueiro will feed the Angola LNG plant, thereby improving Angola’s LNG production capacity and the availability of domestic gas for the country’s industrial development. The start of production is scheduled for mid-2026.

TotalEnergies, in association with the Ministry of Energy and Water as well as its partners Sonangol and Greentech, has also been awarded by the Angolan authorities, the concession which will allow the construction of the Quilemba photovoltaic power plant, a capacity of 35 MWp, with the possibility of adding 45 MWp in a second phase.

This plant, located in Lubango in the south of the country, should come into service at the end of 2023. It will contribute to the decarbonization of the Angolan energy mix and, through a purchase contract (PPA) at a fixed price, will allow the Angolan State to achieve substantial savings compared to the fuel used in existing thermal power plants. TotalEnergies holds a 51% stake in Quilemba Solar, alongside subsidiaries of Sonangol EP (30%) and Angola Environment Technology (Greentech, 19%).
