Tottenham loan extended: Timo Werner will not return to Leipzig

Striker stays in England
Timo Werner will not return to Leipzig

Due to an injury, Timo Werner will miss the season finale and will not play a role in the German European Championship squad. Nevertheless, Tottenham Hotspur wants to keep the striker – but not with a purchase option, as Rasenballsport Leipzig would have liked.

Timo Werner is staying at Tottenham Hotspur. The English Premier League club and Werner’s home club Rasenballsport Leipzig have agreed on another loan deal for the coming season. Spurs announced this. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the 57-time national player will be loaned to the London club under the same conditions until the end of June 2025. Spurs will pay the striker’s salary and also have a purchase option in the region of 15 million euros.

“We are very pleased that we found a good solution for both sides so early in the transfer phase. Timo’s loan in the winter definitely paid off, so we wanted to give him the opportunity to continue,” said Rasenballsport sports director Rouven Schröder. However, Tottenham has thus let their first purchase option this summer pass.

This is not an ideal solution for Leipzig. By loaning him to Tottenham in January, the club had actually hoped to draw the attention of potential buyers to Werner, who still has a contract until 2026. The Saxons must also generate a transfer surplus this summer and are dependent on transfer fees for their loan players. Werner made 13 appearances in the Premier League, but missed the last five games due to a thigh injury. The Stuttgart native is not part of the German squad for the European Championship.

Another of Leipzig’s loan problems seems to be resolved soon. According to a report in Bild, Spaniard Angeliño will move permanently to AS Roma. The left-back will be paid a total of five million euros, which will be paid in several installments. Leipzig has also loaned out striker André Silva (San Sebastián) and midfielder Ilaix Moriba (Getafe FC).

On the incoming side, there are increasing signs of a transfer of Bilal El Khannouss from KRC Genk. The 20-year-old confirmed to Het Nieuwsblad that he will move in the summer. “I would choose Germany. A club that has something to do with energy drinks? That would be possible and nice to do that with Maarten,” said the midfielder. Goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt is moving from Genk to Leipzig on July 1. The 22-year-old was signed two years ago for ten million euros, but continued to gain match practice at his youth club.
