Toulouse: the “cannibal of the Pyrenees”, who had escaped from the psychiatric hospital, was arrested after an attack

MISCELLANEOUS – Last Wednesday, BAC police officers arrested a man who had just attacked a septuagenarian in a street in Toulouse (Haute-Garonne). Quickly identified, the man is none other than Jérémy Rimbaud, a former soldier who killed a man and ate part of his body in 2013.

By dialing 17 this Wednesday, January 19, the inhabitants of rue de la Balance in Toulouse were unaware of the alleged attacker whom they had just reported to the police. That day, around 10 p.m., one of them, hearing cries and seeing a man with a stick hitting a woman on the ground, intervened to help her.

“The 72-year-old victim was walking his dog and was hit numerous times by this individual. A neighbor intervened and held the attacker at bay with an unloaded gun. dernire tried in vain to disarm him then the BAC police arrived on the spot and arrested the man who was still holding the stick in his hands before identifying him”, indicates a police source to LCI. And the name of the suspect is well known to them. This is Jérémy Rimbaud, alias the “Cannibal of the Pyrenees”, 34 years old.

“We can imagine that he was stopped in time, because when we know his past and his medical background, we can wonder how far he would have been able to go”, comments a source close to the file. A few hours earlier this Wednesday, January 19, Jérémy Rimbaud had indeed escaped from the Marchant hospital in Toulouse where he has been interned for years. A worrying disappearance procedure was then opened and a search was immediately launched by the police.

He had eaten the heart and the tongue of a nonagenarian

In February 2014, in a village in the Hautes-Pyrénées, this former soldier was suspected of having eaten the heart and tongue of a nonagenarian three months earlier whom he had killed by smashing his skull with a metal tool. The ex-corporal, then 26 years old, had thus been indicted for murder and attack on the integrity of a corpse. He had also been indicted for the attempted murder of another man, attacked the same day.

Two years after these events, Jérémy Rimbaud had been declared irresponsible for his actions at the time of the events and could not therefore be tried for his crimes. Psychiatric experts had unanimously considered that “Mr. Rimbaud was suffering from a psychiatric disorder which completely abolished his discernment. In front of the doctors and the investigators, Jérémy Rimbaud had evoked at the time “external forces”, saying “to have received orders by voices”.

The man had served for five years in the regiment of the marine tank infantry (RCIM) of Poitiers and had been engaged in Afghanistan in 2011 and 2012. No psychological problem had been detected in his military file.

The septuagenarian will be heard next week

The septuagenarian attacked on Wednesday is very shocked. “The hospitalized victim suffered broken arms and head wounds caused by beatings. She will be heard next week.” indicates the prosecutor of the Republic of Toulouse Samuel Vuelta-Simon this Friday in a press release.

Placed in police custody on Wednesday at 10:15 p.m., Jérémy Rimbaud was taken back to a psychiatric hospital after the doctor who visited him during the security measure found that his mental state was not compatible with police custody.

“An investigation was opened by the Toulouse prosecutor’s office in order to continue the investigations and to verify the responsibility of the author at the time of the commission of the facts, by way of psychiatric expertise”, informs the public prosecutor of Toulouse.
