While the Grande Boucle will start in Copenhagen this Friday, July 1, the jersey of the world champion will not survey the French regions during the three intense weeks of competition.
Two months after being the victim of a heavy fall during Liège-Bastogne-Liège, Julian Alaphilippe had made his comeback to competition this weekend during the French championships. As a reminder, his fall had caused him in particular a pneumothorax and several fractures to the shoulder blades and ribs. Best climber of the Tour de France 2018, the husband of Marion Rousse had ignited the 2019 edition by wearing the yellow jersey for 14 stages. Also wearing the mythical jersey during the race in 2020 and 2021, he has always thrilled his fans during the Tour de France.
Julian Alaphilippe will not participate in the Tour de France
Here is the official press release from his team: “The decision to leave Julian at home was very difficult because it’s one of the team’s most iconic riders and we wrote so many great moments together on the Tour de France… Julian worked hard to get back into shape after what happened to him in Liège. But we feel that for a rider like him, it’s always important to be in top form and to be able to compete with the best. That is why we decided to give him more time to recover and rebuild his condition”.
