Dane Jakob Fuglsang, who suffers from a broken rib, is giving up on continuing the Tour de France, his team Israel PT announced on Monday during the rest day. Fuglsang crashed on Sunday in the 14th stage and crossed the finish line in Carcassonne more than twenty minutes from the first peloton.
“Better pull the plug, go home and recover“said the runner who had x-rays on Sunday after the stage. “I’ve tried to run with a broken rib before, fight back and go all the way. But, in this case, I know I have nothing to gain by trying to hang onadded the Dane. “I know it’s too painful to carry on, so it’s my only option“.
Fuglsang, 37, was in 59th place overall, more than an hour and a half behind the yellow jersey worn by his compatriot Jonas Vingegaard. The double winner of the Critérium du Dauphiné (2017, 2019) was third in the Tour de Suisse last month.
