Slovenian Tadej Pogacar has strengthened his yellow jersey and his lead in the general classification of the 2024 Tour de France after his solo victory on stage 14. He crossed the finish line 39 seconds ahead of his rival Jonas Vingegaard. He now has a 1:57 lead over his Danish rival.

Tadej Pogacar strengthened his yellow jersey by soloing to victory in the 14th stage of the Tour de France on Saturday at Pla d’Adet, 39 seconds ahead of his rival Jonas Vingegaard. The Slovenian, who attacked less than five kilometres from the summit, now has a 1:57 lead over his great Danish rival in the general classification. Belgian Remco Evenepoel crossed the line in third position, 1:10 behind the winner, and has dropped back to third place overall, 2:22 behind the yellow jersey.

13th stage victory on the Tour for Pogacar

It is the 13th stage victory in the Tour de France for Pogacar, winner of the general classification in 2020 and 2021, who dreams of reclaiming his throne after being overtaken by Vingegaard in the last two years. He struck a major blow on Saturday for the first summit finish of this 111th edition by dropping his rivals less than five kilometers from the finish on the steepest percentages of this third climb of the day.

In a nice tactical move, he had sent his lieutenant Adam Yates up front a few minutes earlier to support him after his attack. Once he had swallowed up the last escapee, the Irishman Ben Healy, Pogacar gradually widened his advantage over Vingegaard to cross the line with a cry of rage, a sign of his determination.

The Slovenian, who is aiming for a Giro-Tour double unseen since 1998, now has a nice lead in the general classification before another day in the Pyrenees on Sunday.
