The American company Pure Storage plans an evolution of its storage solutions much more ambitious than the competition.
SSDs have all but ended the long years of HDD reign in home devices. If it is still possible to see them in some desktop computers, external boxes or even NAS, their use always disappears a little more each year. Except in the case of the vast majority of data centers, for which the storage capacities of SSDs or their higher prices per GB, among other things, still represent a major obstacle to taking the plunge.
200 TB from 2024
In order to occupy the data center market on a larger scale, Pure Storage plans to launch more suitable SSD solutions by 2026. The company, which specialized in the design of storage arrays without hard drives, has developed proprietary drives that work with an in-house operating system, FlashBlade. This combination allows the installation of SSDs with increasingly large capacities.
According to Alex McMullan, CTO of the company, the company’s roadmap for the next four years shows that 100TB and 200TB SSDs could arrive very soon. He announces : ” Over the next two years, we intend to take our competitive positioning in hard drives to a whole new level. Today we are shipping 24TB and 48TB drives. You can expect a series of announcements at our Accelerate conference about ever larger drives, with our stated ambition to deliver 300TB drives. ‘by 2026 or before. »
A very (too?) short period of time
The American company did not specify how it intended to go about achieving such capabilities. It could increase the size of its disks, which it already does with some of its solutions. But, above all, it plans to use chips up to three times denser, which manufacturers believe they can provide within… five years, so beyond 2026.
These forecasts far exceed those of heavyweights in the sector, still seated in the development of hard drives. On the one hand, Toshiba is aiming for 40 TB by 2026 with MAS-MAMR and HAMR storage technologies. On the other hand, Seagate plans to market 50 TB hard drives by 2025 and more than 100 TB by 2030. Pure Storage therefore aims to market SSDs with capacities five times higher than the hard drives of the competition at the same time, which represents a major challenge, but also a sign that the sector intends to evolve very quickly.
