“Towards a more banal virus”: Professor Alain Fischer makes an optimistic hypothesis about the evolution of the epidemic

On the antenna of BFMTV, the scientist and professor Alain Fischer explained, this Monday, January 3, that it was possible that the epidemic was running out of steam. This is thanks to the lower virulence of the latest Omicron variant, which could prove that the virus is on the way to becoming “commonplace”.

The government is on the bridge in this new school year marked by the health crisis. For the past month, the situation has worsened due to the appearance of the Omicron variant, combined with Delta. Result: hundreds of thousands of French people have recently tested positive for Covid-19 and must undergo a period of isolation, however revised downwards for people fully vaccinated. Invited on the set of BFMTV, the doctor, researcher in biology and president of the Orientation Council of the vaccine strategy, Alain Fischer, took into account the current context. The one who was appointed by Prime Minister Jean Castex as “Wise among the Wise” in December 2020 notably insisted on the importance of the booster dose.

Alain Fischer welcomes the protection offered by the vaccine

He affirms that the milestone of 25 million French people triply vaccinated is a flagship objective, and that it is tenable. He also confirms the comments made by Olivier Véran this morning on France Inter, namely that the wave of contaminations should continue to grow during this month of January. The professor has also endeavored to give some optimistic outlook for the weeks to come. Already, concerning the effectiveness of the vaccine, he sums up: “After the recall, we are very, very well protected against the Delta and we are well protected against Omicron. With regard to Delta, we know that the level of protection conferred by the recall is extremely high, much higher than the level. already very good provided by the primary vaccination “.

“Towards a more banal virus”?

Finally, concerning this last variant, Alain Fischer sees it as a real opportunity. He explains it as follows: “We are facing with this Omicron a virus which is more resistant to the immune response, which is a little more transmissible but which is less aggressive, less dangerous, which causes fewer serious infections (…) It is perhaps be the beginning of the evolution of the virus towards a more banal virus “. A touch of hope which does not, however, erase the recent fears expressed by the WHO. She feared that the very significant increase in Covid-19 cases caused by the Omicron variant would push international health systems into an uncontrollable situation. Caution therefore remains in order …
