The fourth-generation iPhone SE could incorporate a notch and take inspiration from the design of the iPhone XR with its 6.1-inch diagonal.
The fourth-generation iPhone SE is starting to show. The successor to the 2022 iPhone SE could be headed for a notched form factor, according to supply chain and display analyst Ross Young, interviewed by Mac Rumors. Specifically, the phone would opt for a 6.1-inch LCD screen.
The illustration chosen by MacRumors clearly suggests an iPhone XR design with edges that are not yet quite flat. The choice to integrate a notch format would take on its full meaning if the iPhone 15s come to integrate Dynamic Island, the pill at the top of the screen, from the end of 2023. At that time, the notch format would become “old” and would have its place on a new SE model.
Towards a release in 2024
MacRumors fairly rightly recalls that in October 2021, Ross Young argued that the fourth generation iPhone SE could be released in 2024 with a pill format. He has since revised his judgment. It is not impossible that Apple studied the question before falling back on a model drawing on an old chassis.
The presence of a notch could also be synonymous with the end of Touch ID on the SE range with the possible integration of a TrueDepth sensor, paving the way for Face ID. But it could be otherwise too. My Drivers wrote in 2021 that Apple would consider integrating a Touch ID on the side, via the power button.
