Towards a tool to control the age of users of pornographic sites?

VS’is the bone of contention between the public authorities and the managers of sites prohibited to minors. How to ensure that children and adolescents do not have access to pornographic content? On June 22, the National Commission for Computing and Liberties (Cnil) validated a tool developed by computer scientist Olivier Blazy, professor at the École polytechnique, which should make it possible to verify the age of users while remaining respectful of the data of Internet users, reports The cross.

The teacher had been working for some time in collaboration with the Cnil’s Linc laboratory and the government’s Digital Regulation Expertise Center (PEReN) on a first version of a “digital lock”, now validated by the authorities. This system will not be imposed on pornographic sites, but will be open access and free for platforms wishing to use it. Entities that agree to play the game will be considered to comply with French law. The others will have to adopt an equivalent mechanism, with identical requirements.

Future reference system?

“This prototype must become the reference: any other age control system that will ensure the same level of efficiency and anonymity will be validated. But the Cnil will also be able to ban all solutions that would be less protective, ”explains to our colleagues Olivier Blazy. However, this tool is not unanimous. “Of course, the proposed system is technically well done and is certainly the least liberticidal possible, but it supposes sacrificing anonymity on the Web. Do we measure all the consequences? nuance Bastien Le Querrec, member of La Quadrature du Net.
