BRUSSELS, June 3 (Reuters) – The European Union is expected to agree on June 7 on a long-drafted draft directive that would mandate the adoption of a universal USB-C charger for all smartphone and tablet makers, including Apple, according to people familiar with the matter.
Final discussions are scheduled for Tuesday, and the European Council and European Parliament could reach a compromise on the revision of the radio equipment directive on this occasion, according to these sources.
The USB type C port would become the standard for mobile phones, tablets, headphones, speakers, portable game consoles and cameras, within an estimated 24 months after the conclusion of an agreement, the time that the States Member States transpose the directive and that manufacturers comply with the new rules.
MEPs are insisting that the directive also apply to laptops, which would make things particularly difficult for Samsung and Huawei, as well as other manufacturers, the sources say. (Report Foo Yun Chee, French version Sophie Louet, edited by Kate Entringer)
