While the whole world has been considering the issue for several months, the British Prime Minister has just announced the organization of a major international summit on the subject.

But for the UK, international does it also mean… global?

Pool efforts between countries

As governments around the world ponder the fate of artificial intelligence following recent developments in generative AI programs, industry leaders are calling for global regulation. A good idea, according to British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. He thus asserted: AI has incredible potential to improve our lives. But we have to make sure that it will be developed and used safely. »

Therefore, in the middle of a visit to the United States to promote his nation as a global center of technology, the politician invited the whole world to participate in a great summit on the subject. Well almost, since it is above all a question of obtaining the participation of Joe Biden, the American president. And for good reason, according to Sunak: It would be hard to find any country in the Western world other than the United States that has more AI expertise and talent. »

For the British, it is a question of continuing the discussions begun at the last G7 summit, which was held in Japan last May. It is above all a question of pooling the legislative efforts of several countries, including those of the United States and the European Union. But while the task is commendable, there is one major player that Rishi Sunak struggles to mention: China.

The difficult task of compiling the guest list

The second world power, however, is not lagging behind in terms of artificial intelligence. Already at work for several weeks on its own made in China regulations, one would think that its participation in such an international project would be logical.

Not that much, as the British Prime Minister’s spokesman underlines half-heartedly, who indicates that this summit is aimed at ” countries with a similar approach to that of the United Kingdom. Difficult then to include China. All the more so in a complicated geopolitical context, where the tech sector has been at the center of economic and geopolitical tensions for several years.

Serious participation by the United States and the European Union is also not guaranteed, at least on paper. If relations between the latter and the United Kingdom are not in good shape, the next American elections, where Joe Biden and Donald Trump are candidates for a second round, could leave the country of Uncle Sam cold vis-à-vis screw his ally.

Will it then take a Hollywood scenario for the whole world to unite to fight against a hypothetical artificial intelligence that threatens to end the world?
