Toxic nostalgia
3 reasons why everything wasn’t better before

Reminiscing can also have negative effects on us. Why? You can find out in the video.

We all do it every day: reminisce or talk about the past. It’s part of everyday life. But that’s not always necessarily positive – at least when a look at the past turns into “toxic nostalgia”.

The term “toxic nostalgia” means that we are too attached to the past and that some of our memories were not as beautiful and happy as we believe. It’s about things being glossed over and thereby putting them in a different light. We’ve all probably experienced moments like this before, because in retrospect we no longer see things so closely.

Psychology: Why nostalgia can be toxic

We all know it when we look back nostalgically and use phrases like “everything used to be better”. But was that really it? Memories can deceive us and make something seem better than it actually was. We can’t protect ourselves from it because our heads can play tricks on us. Of course, memories are not bad per se and they are important because they belong to us and also shape us and our lives. Maybe you still recognize yourself in this form of nostalgia or maybe it’s all something completely new for you. You can see in the video what exactly is behind “toxic nostalgia” and to what extent it can be negative.
