Toy Story 2: freeze frame at the first second of the film and look at the stars!

Back to “Toy Story 2”, the third feature film produced by Pixar studios in 1999, and to a small detail very well hidden in the starry sky, at the very beginning of the film.

A giant Mickey Mouse-themed watch hanging in Andy’s bedroom, figurines of 1001 Paws characters on the shelves of a toy store, a postcard sent by Carl and Ellie Fredricksen from Up or even little Darla from Finding Nemo on the cover of a magazine…

As is the case in all the feature films made by Pixar studios so far, the Toy Story quadrilogy is full of small details, easter eggs of all kinds and more or less well hidden references, intended for spectators who like to take out their magnifying glass while rediscovering their favorite films.

The wink that will interest us today is at the very beginning of Toy Story 2, released in France in February 2000. Virtually impossible to spot unless you know exactly where to look for it, it appears very stealthily in the foreground , at the first second of the film (or at 48 seconds if we take into account the Disney and Pixar logos that scroll just before).

Like an episode of the Star Wars saga (from which it is directly inspired on several occasions), the feature film begins in the middle of space. Take a good look at the top right just before the mention “Walt Disney Pictures Presents” invades the screen. You may be able to see – provided you connect the right stars together – that a small constellation draws a silhouette that we know well: that of the small Luxo Jr desk lamp, Pixar’s mascot.

At a time when the illustrious studios were still taking their first steps into the world of cinema under the leadership of Disney, was this almost invisible easter egg a way of discreetly putting their signature on their third feature film?

Anyway, this first easter egg cleverly hidden in the starry sky of Toy Story 2 is far from being the only one in the film. Indeed, we can also note the presence of a 1001 Paws calendar in Andy’s room, a direct reference to Jurassic Park when Rex runs after Barbie’s car, and of course many nods to the Star saga Wars, everywhere in the feature film.
