So far, the consumption of marijuana has been allowed in Germany, but possession and sale are considered a criminal offense. The traffic light parties have now agreed on legalization for pleasure purposes.

According to “Spiegel” information, the coalition working group on health and care agreed on the legalization of cannabis for consumption purposes. In a result paper, the negotiators from the SPD, Greens and FDP are said to have stated: “We are introducing the controlled distribution of cannabis to adults for pleasure in licensed shops”. The quality should be controlled, the passing on of contaminated substances should be prevented and the protection of minors should be guaranteed.

The Greens and FDP have long been in favor of legal, regulated trade in cannabis. All possible traffic light coalition partners had included one form or another of legalized sales in their election manifestos.

The arguments for legalization are the same for all of them: controlled sales will dry up the illegal black market. This enables significantly better protection of minors and more effective addiction prevention. Finally, it is wrong to criminalize millions of cannabis users.
