Traffic light refused: Merkel probably wanted lockdown for everyone

Merkel probably wanted lockdown for everyone

Chancellor Angela Merkel asked representatives of the traffic light parties to the Chancellery yesterday evening to talk about the dicey Corona situation. According to a report, she is apparently promoting an immediate lockdown for everyone by the beginning of December.

According to a “Bild” report, the executive CDU Chancellor Angela Merkel is said to have proposed an immediate lockdown for everyone by December 8th to top representatives of the traffic lights the evening before. With this measure, Merkel tried to contain the threatening spread of corona. According to the “Bild”, however, the SPD, Greens and FDP rejected this proposal.

According to information from the German Press Agency, Merkel had offered the traffic light parties to significantly tighten the measures in view of the impending overload of the health care system. A legal emergency brake or a clear lockdown agreement with the countries would be the obvious options, it said here.

A nationwide lockdown for everyone would only be possible today, Wednesday. Because on November 25th the “epidemic emergency” expires and with the entry into force of the new Infection Protection Act, a general lockdown is in fact impossible.

“On the way to an emergency”

In the conversation with the future government partners SPD, Greens and FDP, Merkel made “the extraordinary seriousness of the situation” clear, said government spokesman Steffen Seibert. “We are on the way to an emergency like we have never had in this country.” Among other things, he referred to increasingly scarce intensive care capacities and the need to transfer patients to other clinics across regions. It must now be a matter of braking and breaking the fourth corona wave, Seibert made it clear to the Chancellor. He did not provide any information on possible further containment measures and calls for a more rapid renewed federal-state vote. He also referred to the confidentiality of the conversation with the SPD, Greens and FDP.

The Saarland CDU Prime Minister Tobias Hans has called for rapid consultations by the Prime Ministers on uniformly stricter rules. “We have to do everything in our power to prevent the threat of overburdening the health system and not wait until December 9th to analyze the situation,” said Hans in Berlin.
