Train drivers’ strike in Germany – SBB replaces canceled train connections on Swiss routes – News

  • The train drivers’ strike in Germany planned for Wednesday will lead to many cancellations in cross-border passenger transport.
  • Canceled train connections on Swiss routes will be replaced, as the SBB announced.
  • Domestic traffic should, if possible, not be affected, as an SBB spokesman said when asked by the Keystone-SDA news agency.

The train drivers’ strike in Germany and the associated restrictions on the Swiss rail network last from Wednesday 2 a.m. to Friday 6 p.m. Night trains traveling to Germany are also affected.

The SBB recommends postponing trips to or through Germany to another time. Thanks to a special gesture from Deutsche Bahn, travelers would have the opportunity to postpone their trips and use the ticket sooner or later.

SBB Germany probably not affected by the strike

Cross-border regional traffic between Germany and Switzerland can probably also be continued. SBB Germany, which is a 100 percent subsidiary of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB AG), is not affected by the strike call. Accordingly, the train drivers of SBB Germany are not on strike.

This means that SBB Germany trains will run as usual on lines S5 and S6 of the trinational S-Bahn Basel in Wiesental, as the German company announced at midday – provided the required infrastructure is available.

Because the operation of SBB Germany is dependent on the infrastructure operator DB Netz AG and its tracks and systems, it says SBB Germany website. If DB Netz AG employees went on strike in addition to the train drivers, SBB Germany trains would also come to a standstill.

In Germany, the train drivers’ union wants to strike for three days and severely restrict rail traffic. They demand shorter working hours with full wage compensation in freight and passenger transport.
