Ukraine: Explosion on railway bridge in Russia

The Ukrainian secret service reports a blast on a railway bridge in Russia. A photo shows the damaged but not completely destroyed structure. There is said to be an ammunition factory nearby.

According to the Defense Intelligence Service of Ukraine, a railway bridge over the Chapayevka River damaged in the Russian Samara region in the city of Chapayevsk. The power lines were blown up early in the morning, a statement said. Russia used the route to transport military goods, including ammunition. This was manufactured in a factory in Chapayevsk.

According to Ukrainian sources, the use of the railway bridge “will not be possible for a long time.” A picture published by the Defense Intelligence Service shows a damaged bridge, but it is far from completely destroyed. It is not known how long a repair will take.

A blast in this region is surprising since the Samara region is located deep inside Russia. There are around 1,000 kilometers between it and the front in Ukraine. Samara is one of the country’s heavy industrial centers. Kiev’s defense intelligence service did not say who was responsible for the attack.

The Russian state news agency TASS spoke of the detonation of an explosive device. “According to initial information, the fence and bridge pillars near the bank were damaged.” Railway traffic over the bridge was interrupted, Russian Railways said. No injuries were reported.

Ukraine is trying to disrupt Russian supply routes to the front with attacks on infrastructure. In particular, the Kerch Bridge, which connects the Crimean peninsula with the mainland, is always in Kiev’s sights.
