Trains stand still – fire in Frohnleiten calls for 85 firefighters

In the north of Graz, 85 emergency services are currently fighting a railway embankment fire. Train traffic between Mixnitz and Frohnleiten has come to a standstill.

In Frohnleiten, 85 firefighters have their hands full right now. So far, according to initial information from the police, it is known that around 2:30 p.m. a freight train was traveling from Wiener Neustadt in the direction of Graz and sparks are likely to have flown on this route. The flying sparks are said to have triggered four sources of fire, one of which is larger. “The fire is in a very rough area in the Wannersdorf area,” confirms Herbert Buchgraber, spokesman for the Graz-Surrounding Fire Brigade Association. “The reason for the fire is likely to be an embankment fire from the railway embankment, which has spread to rocky terrain.” These difficult circumstances would demand a lot from the firefighters. “It’s an extreme burden for our men,” says Buchgraber. A helicopter from the Ministry of the Interior supports the firefighting operation from the air with a water supply. The train traffic between Frohnleiten and Mixnix is currently blocked, the blockage can last for several hours.
