Presented at the end of the Séries Mania festival last March, this new creation by Anna Winger (Unorthodox) stands out for its distinguished direction and costumes, but above all for its impressive cast. Lidia lays down her law on Netflix, an Italian detective series more rock than it seems
Here you are propelled in 1883, in Turin. You then meet Lidia Poët, a penniless young lawyer who is just beginning to practice her profession… before having her authorization withdrawn. The cause ? She is obviously a woman. What a dark idea to want to play another role than a stay-at-home mother, let’s see. Except that Lidia Poët is not going to let it go and continue to solve murders or other crimes, to prove her talent.
We must admit that we had never heard the name of Lidia Poët before discovering this wonderful Italian creation on Netflix. Yet she is the first woman lawyer in the history of Italy. The story of his life, which one might have feared was too biographical and not rhythmic enough, nevertheless takes on a surprisingly rock’n’roll form. Each investigation of our young lawyer is thus punctuated by astonishing melodies on the guitar, mixed with a relentless narrative tempo, which works like sherlock Or Enola Holmes.
To note that Lidia lays down her law shines above all with the acting of its main interpreter, the Italian actress Matilda De Angelis, a real revelation, whom we can’t wait to see in other productions. The Spy on Netflix, a spy mini-series to hold your breath
You devoured The Office of Legends Or Homeland without stopping and you were disappointed by Connection, on Apple TV+? So don’t miss The Spy, which may well meet your expectations. This mini-series in just 6 episodes is inspired by the true story of Eli Cohen, a former Mossad agent infiltrated in Syria. Set in the 1960s, The Spy tells how this spy managed to get closer to several high-ranking soldiers and politicians. Stuck in his dual identity, forced to lie to his loved ones and his family, Eli Cohen has sacrificed a lot to serve his country.
We end this selection with the most nervous series of our 3 recommendations, a real spy thriller created and written by the great Gideon Raff (Hatufim, Homeland). Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat, The Dictator) finds there one of his best performances as an actor, in the main role. He is thus astonishing by the dramatic mastery of his acting, whereas we knew him more in comic roles or even excessively parodic. The actor’s ease in disguising himself under any identity thus establishes an omnipresent tension in this historical series, which develops geo-political intrigues with a precision of formidable efficiency.
