(Boursier.com) — New drop in cargo activity in the global sky. Demand, measured in freight tonne-kilometres (CTK), decreased by 6.6% compared to April 2022 (-7.0% for international operations). This decline is nevertheless an improvement compared to the performance of the previous month (-7.6%), show data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Capacity (measured in available freight tonne-kilometres, ACTK) increased by 13.4% over one year. They are 3.2% higher than in April 2019, thus exceeding pre-Covid levels for the first time in three years. The strong increase is mainly due to cargo hold capacity as demand in the passenger sector recovers.

“The air cargo industry is adjusting to the implications of the recovery in passenger demand which comes with an expansion of hold capacity. Preighter operations ceased in March and cargo services have been curtailed down 2.3% in April The demand environment is hard to read The decline in inflation is definitely a positive But the degree and speed at which this could lead to looser monetary policies that could boost demand are unclear. The resilience that has carried the air cargo industry through the Covid-19 crisis is also critical for what comes next,” said IATA Director General Willie Walsh.
