Tuesday already, the call to strike had been little followed by the employees of the SNCF. Earlier, the unions mentioned a renewal of the strike for Wednesday.

Un short-lived social movement in transport. Tuesday, October 18, the SNCF indicated that it planned a “gradual return to normal” from Wednesday. The company plans a “gradual return to normal” on Wednesday on most of its train lines, even if “disturbances are nevertheless still possible locally” in particular on certain suburban and RER trains in Île-de-France. “National and international TGV traffic will be almost normal, and Intercity traffic slightly disrupted”, indicates the SNCF in a press release, specifying that only one in two trains will still run on the RER D and the northern portion of the RER B, as well as on the transiliens H, R and U.

The strike movement at the RATP for wages should not be renewed on Wednesday, the secretary general of the CGT-RATP Bertrand Hammache told AFP on Tuesday, while the strike day is only moderately followed in the company. “On the other hand, it is the beginning of a cycle”, he indicated, not excluding new days of mobilization “after the All Saints school holidays” which end on November 6.

The CGT was the only representative trade union organization to call for a strike at the RATP. She calls for the opening of immediate wage negotiations to deal with inflation. The next round of negotiations is scheduled for December and should concern increases for the year 2023. On Tuesday, the metro was only very slightly disturbed on the RATP network despite the strike and three out of four RERs were operating on portions of lines A and B operated by the authority. On the other hand, only two out of three buses were circulating.

Towards a new day of action at the SNCF

Regarding the SNCF, where the CGT-Cheminots and Sud-Rail called for a strike, “a third of the general assemblies renew (the strike)”, announced on Twitter the secretary general of the CGT Laurent Brun by revealing the first trends. “The others are asking for a new day of action. So, in any case, the railway workers are determined to obtain real wage increases. Contrary to the lies of the HRD of the SNCF, there was only 1.4% and 500 euros per year, ”he added. The HRD, François Nogué, said Monday that the SNCF had increased wages by 5.8% on average in 2022, the level of inflation.

Despite disruptions in the Paris region with one in three trains on the RER D or lines J, L and R of the Transilien, the strike did not pose any major problems on the network. In the regions, only one out of two TERs was planned on average and TGV traffic was “almost normal” with slight disruptions on the Ouigo or the Atlantic network, the France-Spain and Eurostar links.
