Travel: 13 tricks to hide your valuables while bathing

Hardly anyone likes to leave their belongings like cash, cards or cell phones lying around openly on the beach, pool or lake. We’ll show you the smart hiding places! So you can leave your towel behind without worrying when you go swimming.

“Less is more” is the motto when it comes to packing your beach bag or your backpack for a trip to the lake or the sea. Unfortunately, it is often the valuables that we cannot do without. Whether it is a smartphone, car keys, camera, wallet or even just an EC card, we often just cannot do without them.

But what is the best way to hide these important valuables when we want to go into the water with our loved ones or take a long walk on the beach? Because constantly looking anxiously at your towel in the sea because you’re afraid something might be stolen is anything but a stress-free vacation! We have a few great ideas that you probably don’t know yet so that you can go swimming without driving yourself crazy because your valuables have disappeared after cooling off in the water. Let’s go!

Smart tips on where to hide your valuables

1. Who finished drinking the Capri-Sun?

An as yet unknown and smart hiding place is the empty Capri-Sun. At home, wash out the empty packaging and carefully cut open the bottom. Push the cash or debit card in there. When you go into the water, leave the Capri-Sun with the straw in it half under the towel so that the cut part is not visible. It’s pretty unlikely that a thief would take the rubbish with them. Or is it?

2. Don’t forget the sunscreen, honey!

The trick with sunscreen is similar. But it’s not particularly new. There are now even fake sunscreen tubes online that you can buy and hide your belongings in. Other packaging and bottles are also great for secret storage. Small valuables such as rings, necklaces or cash can easily be hidden in perfume atomizers, empty cigarette boxes or rouge or powder containers.

3. On hot days we also have to drink plenty of water…

On hot days, thieves are more likely to suspect that drinking bottles contain cooling liquids rather than hot goods. There are even thermos flasks with a special secret compartment for valuables. The hidden compartment is usually in the bottom with an invisible screw cap for cash, keys, and jewelry.

4. To tie hair…

… and to hide things. A really brilliant tip is the scrunchi hair tie with a zipper. Available online from various retailers. And it’s hard to believe, but it actually fits cash, keys and cards!

5. A snacktastic hiding place

Do you know the trick with the lunch box? The best thing to do is to take a really worn-out, old snack box. Put a piece of bread inside, but don’t smear it on it; it’s just a hiding place. Put your banknotes or credit card between the slices of bread. Tadaa! You now have a hiding place that only a really hungry crook would come across.

6. Attention, tripping hazard!

Also available online is the fake stone, which really feels and looks like a stone. It is hollow on the inside and is an ideal storage box for keys.

7. Brilliant beach bag 2.0

You may have already spotted them on other bathers: special backpacks that you can attach to your lounger, for example. They are made of a stainless steel wire mesh and are extremely difficult to cut open. The special bags are also equipped with a lock and a steel cable. There are even some with an integrated cooler for food, including anti-theft functions. Particularly recommended for large valuables such as cameras, drones or other technical devices.

8. On the beach: safety first!

A similar variant is the so-called beach safe. This is not a bag, but a storage box for keys, cell phones, watches, wallets or sunglasses. This can also be easily attached to a beach chair or deck chair.

9. 3-in-1: Waterproof, fashionable and 100 percent safe

Do you feel uncomfortable leaving your car keys in your seat or do you want to take your cell phone with you on the stand-up paddleboard to take pictures? No problem! There are now many different and practical waterproof bags for taking valuables into the water. Whether it’s a neck pouch, belt bag or cell phone case – there’s something for every taste.

10. Let’s build a sandcastle

Are you swimming on a sandy beach? Then it’s a good idea to bury your wallet or car keys in a small plastic bag in the sand. Sandcastles are great for camouflage and you’ll be 100% sure you find your valuables again. It’s best not to bury technical devices like cell phones in the sand!

11. Your favorite reading material becomes a treasure chest

The classic is the secret compartment in the book. Hollow out the inside of the last novel you read (that doesn’t need to be read a second time) and hide your valuables there. Our tip: It looks even more authentic with a bookmark.

12. Ugh, everyone stays away from that…

If there is a really smart idea for hiding valuables, it is the diaper trick. Simply ingenious! You take an empty diaper (of course) and wrap everything that is important to you in it. Then you tape them together so that it looks as if the diaper is full. It is best to then put the diaper in a plastic bag so that it looks realistic.

13. Nobody wants to touch dirty underwear, right?

You can also easily wrap small things in an old pair of panties or boxer shorts or put them in the pockets of an old push-up bra. However, it can happen that underwear still arouses interest in certain people…
