One thing seems as certain this winter as Christmas: heating will be expensive. So why not travel for a while and maybe even work somewhere else?

The energy crisis is making heating expensive, and the cost of living is likely to continue to rise as well, thanks to inflation. Not only tourism managers: inside the question arises: Isn’t the money better invested if you treat yourself to a warm winter trip – instead of making the energy suppliers even richer than they already are?

“No German will freeze in Greece”

In any case, Panagiotis Simandirakis, mayor of the Cretan port city of Chania, played with this calculation when he promised: “No German will freeze in Greece”. He continued to tell the Bild newspaper: “We invite every German who wants to come to us this winter to live here – away from the crises.” Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilias joined in the siren song and lured with a Mediterranean winter, mild temperatures, hospitality and quality services. In the Greek winter you don’t need heating, and you can sublet the apartment in your cold homeland.

Workation: Working where others vacation

However, since very few can afford to be lazy or in the sun for half the winter, some can also consider doing their job where they usually go on vacation. The pandemic has long since proven that mobile working is possible in many sectors and has various advantages – such as the free choice of work location (although there are a few things to consider and a stay abroad must be clarified with the employer). And so more and more regions with sunny conditions are enticing for temporary work abroad: warm weather, stable internet, cheap housing, little or no time difference. Those who go on workation shift their work to a holiday location for a certain period of time without having to take a vacation.

These destinations are ideal for the winter – with or without work in your luggage
