Great Britain introduces hotel quarantine

In the fight against the spread of corona mutants, Great Britain is tightening quarantine measures. In the future, travelers from countries on the "red list" will have to pay 2000 euros for a mandatory hotel quarantine. If a stay is concealed, there is even a risk of imprisonment.

In Great Britain, stricter entry regulations have come into force due to the new Corona variants. Travelers from high-risk countries will be quarantined in hotels at their own expense with immediate effect. All other immigrants, including those from Germany, must isolate themselves for ten days at a location of their choice after entering the country. If the stay in a high-risk country is kept secret, prison sentences of up to ten years are threatened.

The stricter regulations apply to entry from 33 countries that have been classified as risk areas by the British government. The countries on the "red list" include all South American countries, South Africa and Portugal.

People without British citizenship or permanent residence permits are already banned from entering these countries. All others must immediately stay in a quarantine hotel for ten days after entering the country and undergo several corona tests.

Large fines for those who refuse to quarantine

According to the government, it has signed contracts with 16 hotels near the airport. Almost 5000 of a total of 58,000 rooms are already available, according to the information. The eleven nights cost 1750 pounds (2000 euros), which also includes costs for transport and food, the corona tests during quarantine and the security service. Those who refuse to take the tests risk fined between £ 1,000 and £ 2,000. Anyone who opposes the hotel quarantine has to pay a fine of 5,000 to 10,000 pounds.

Health Minister Matt Hancock said the new regulations strengthened the British quarantine system and provided additional protection against new corona variants. The government has worked with London's Heathrow Airport and border guards to explain the new process to everyone involved, Hancock said on Times Radio. Everything went "smoothly" on Monday morning.

With more than 117,000 deaths, Great Britain is one of the countries most affected by the corona pandemic. The British vaccination campaign is going better than in any other European country. The United Kingdom reached an important interim goal on Sunday: 15 million of its 66 million inhabitants have already received a vaccine dose. From Monday, the immunization of the next group was on the program, which includes all 65 to 69-year-olds and high-risk patients.
