Treatment of sinusitis: what natural remedies to relieve it? : Current Woman Le MAG

Sinusitis is characterized by obstruction of the upper nasal passages represented by the sinuses. When the sinuses are blocked, inflammation and pain in the head, nose and face occur. Sinusitis is often a complication of seasonal allergies or a cold. While some over-the-counter treatments may reduce symptoms, natural remedies are also effective and can help relieve the discomfort caused by a sinus infection.

1. Sinusitis: what is it?

The MSD Manual details the symptoms and process that leads to sinusitis. Sinusitis can be very difficult to live with, as it causes insomnia due to difficulty breathing and headaches. Sinusitis occurs due to inflammation of the facial airways, which causes obstruction of the sinuses, preventing air from flowing freely. However, the sinuses are lined with tissue and limited by the bone structure, therefore sinus congestion results in pain in the face, in the nose, in the area above the eyebrows, in the cheeks, between the eyes , or even dental pain.

2. Treatment of sinusitis: hydrate sufficiently

The article Sinus Infection (Sinusitis), published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in August 2019, states that good hydration is essential for sinusitis. Drinking enough fluids helps the immune system fight infections better and promotes recovery. In addition, in the event of sinusitis, hydrating yourself regularly helps protect the skin and mucous membranes of the sinuses, which can help limit irritation, thin the mucus and avoid secondary infection.

3. Treatment of sinusitis: use eucalyptus essential oil

The study entitled Antiviral Activities of Eucalyptus Essential Oils: Their Effectiveness as Therapeutic Targets against Human Viruses, published by the medical journal Pharmaceuticals in 2021, establishes the benefits of eucalyptus essential oil in the fight against viruses that affect the body. So, if your sinusitis is linked to a viral infection (and not a seasonal allergy), it is recommended to add a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil to your bath water or inhaler to speed up healing. . If you don’t have an inhaler, put a few drops of eucalyptus EO in a bowl of very hot water, then, with your head covered with a towel, breathe in the vapors for a few minutes. The cineole contained in eucalyptus EO promotes the healing of viral sinusitis, reduces nasal congestion and clears the respiratory tract.

4. Treatment of sinusitis: doing inhalations

The study Effectiveness of steam inhalation and nasal irrigation for chronic or recurrent sinus symptoms in primary care: a pragmatic randomized controlled trial, published by the Canadian Medical Association Journal in September 2016, failed to prove that steam inhalation of water was found to be beneficial in improving the healing of sinusitis. However, it seems that the humidity created by the water vapor helps the mucus loosen in the nasal passages. While scientific research does not support the effectiveness of steam in reducing sinus congestion, many people claim that inhalations relieve nasal obstruction, even without adding essential oils.
