The color institute Pantone has announced the colors of the year 2021. "Illuminating" and "Ultimate Gray" are supposed to spread hope.

The year 2021 knows its official colors. As the color institute Pantone announced on Wednesday – traditionally at the beginning of December – the next twelve months will most likely be dominated by gray and yellow tones. Or rather from "Ultimate Gray" and "Illuminating".

Feeling of constancy and zest for life

According to the color experts, "Ultimate Gray" is "a symbol of the solid reliability of an imperishable, secure foundation", similar to pebbles on the beach. It is the first time that Pantone has chosen an achromatic color like gray as Color of the Year. It should have a "subtle calming effect" and create a "feeling of serenity, consistency and resilience".

"Illuminating", on the other hand, is a bright and happy yellow that sparkles with liveliness and warms with the power of the sun. "In a time of persistent uncertainty, in which mankind would like to draw strength, clarity and hope, energetic colors give courage and joy of life", explains the color institute.

In combination, "Ultimate Gray" and "Illuminating" would underline "how different elements can support each other" as independent colors. According to experts, their unity testifies to positivity and "carries a message of happiness and the strength that gives hope".

The successor to "Classic Blue"

For 2020, Pantone had predicted the "Classic Blue" color trend. Previously, "Living Coral" (2019), "Ultraviolet" (2018) and "Greenery" (2017) were given the same title. In 2016 there were two colors of the year with "Rosenquarz" and "Serenity". According to the color institute, various branches of industry such as marketing, fashion and design will be oriented towards "Ultimate Gray" and "Illuminating" in the coming months.
