The prosecutors began on Wednesday afternoon to substantiate their charges against ex-Raiffeisen boss Pierin Vincenz and co-defendants. All of the accused had previously declared in the Zurich Volkshaus that they felt innocent.

Vincenz had “for years been reimbursed by the Raiffeisen bank for various expenses that were not business-related,” said one of the pleading prosecutors. The indictment lists visits to strip clubs for 200,000 francs and private trips for 250,000 francs.

Pierin Vincent, who had already been questioned on Tuesday evening, had explained in this regard that it was a private investment that he did not want to be known. That was 15 years ago, he was inexperienced, the 65-year-old explained.

Among other things, they are said to have worked specifically to ensure that the credit card company Aduno, which they control, takes over the terminal service provider Commtrain. According to the public prosecutor, the two had secretly participated in the latter in order to make an illegal profit when it was taken over.

Pleas last several days

The prosecutors assume that Vincenz and Stocker are guilty of fraud and unfaithful business management, among other things. They are said to have made an illegal profit of CHF 25 million. Five co-accused are said to have provided assistance at different times. All of the accused who were present declared that they were innocent when questioned by the judge.

The indictment still leaves him “perplexed”, said one of the accused men. The fact that Vincenz, according to the indictment, should have received a commission of two million francs if he could persuade his Raiffeisen group to buy a football stadium, was not considered by one of the accused to be anything out of the ordinary.

When a sale comes about in the real estate industry, a commission is often due, the accused stated. Such a commission is not actively offered in the sense of bribery, and in the end it doesn’t matter to whom it goes in the end.

In the case of the stadium, there was no deal – in the end, no commission was paid. According to the indictment, Vincenz and Stocker came to the conclusion that “it would not be possible to convince the decision-making bodies of the Raiffeisen group of this transaction” – partly because of an expert opinion on the earnings prospects of the stadium.

The Zurich District Court will continue the hearing on Thursday. Prosecutors will continue with their pleading. The representatives of the private prosecutors and the defense teams will then plead. This will take several days.
