Trial for pilot training: student pilots win against Lufthansa

Trial for pilot training
Flight students win against Lufthansa

Corona causes a shortage of passengers in global air traffic. So Lufthansa needs fewer pilots. She no longer wants to comply with the agreements on the training of flight students. These fight back – and go to court.

In a dispute with a few hundred flight students, Lufthansa suffered a first setback. In an urgent procedure, the Frankfurt Labor Court confirmed an injunction against the training subsidiary Lufthansa Aviation Training (LAT), according to which it must continue the training of ten plaintiffs at the Phoenix flight school in the US state of Arizona.

A justice spokeswoman confirmed this. However, the judgment is not yet final. One is examining the legal possibilities, said a spokesman for the LAT. The background to this is a comprehensive reorganization of pilot training in the Lufthansa Group. Due to the foreseeable lower need to overcome the Corona crisis, Lufthansa broke off the training of several hundred flight students in spring 2020.

The candidates were later offered a continuation at an external flight school in Essen, as their own facility in Bremen is largely being closed. According to lawyers, around 400 students have decided to file lawsuits in order to enforce the originally agreed training path. The first main negotiations should begin this year at the Frankfurt Labor Court.
