Trial of attempted murder – In the dispute, a kitchen knife was rammed through the door

The dispute between a Turkish couple escalated in a Viennese apartment. With full force, the man stabbed the door with a knife. More and more women in Austria have to go through such traumatizing events with a violent background. The number of femicides speaks volumes. In the case now being negotiated, the verdict is astounding.

“When I saw the expression in his eyes, I thought that my life is over now,” the 43-year-old described the tragic moments in which her husband and father of their son completely freaked out. It was July 30th . After an argument about money, the 44-year-old took a knife from the kitchen. He pushed the woman against the apartment door and, according to the prosecutor, yelled: “I’ll stab you!” Her husband swung the knife, which got stuck in the door. Frightened, the five-year-old son hid under the covers. Contradictory statements from the victimSo far, so terrible. But: did the man stab the door as part of a threat? As stated by Manfred Arbacher and Rudolf Mayer, the defendant’s lawyers, based on a statement by the victim recorded at the crime scene. Or did the Turk want to kill his wife with the knife and she was just able to dodge? At least that’s what the 43-year-old said under oath in the Vienna Regional Court. The jury followed the defense The jury followed the defense – it wasn’t an attempted murder. The slight man was therefore sentenced “only” to 14 months in prison, ten of which were conditional, for dangerous threats, coercion and bodily harm. Because the trained carpenter had been in custody since the crime, he was released immediately after the verdict and was able to go home.
